Following up from their first win of the season last week, the Glasgow girls were looking forward to their second match of the season, hoping to bring home another big win. Despite the cold weather and on/ off rain, the girls brought home a huge 16-0 win.
With Eleanor Kerins beginning on the draw, Glasgow gains possession and the ball quickly makes its way into attack. Attack briefly settles and the ball is passed round. With the ball in Melissa Raske’s possession, Devon Troup sees an opportunity, cuts and scores the first goal for Glasgow. On the next draw, following a fight for the ball, St Andrews takes possession and begins to run the ball down the pitch.
A midfield pass is made which is intercepted by M. Raske who passes to D. Troup. Following an interception by St Andrews the ball is turned over and begins transitioning into attack. However an offside call is made by the ref and Glasgow’s Alayah Okhai takes possession. A great midfield transition by Glasgow follows including passes to Eve Caldwell, Emily Blaszkow and Kristen Mahoney. A time out is called by St Andrews.
On the next draw possession isn’t immediately take by either team, however after a fight for the ground ball, Glasgow takes possession. A pass is made to D. Troup, who misses but is backed up by Iona McMillan. She takes a shot on goal, which is saved by the St Andrews goalie.
She clears to a midfield St Andrews player, who runs the ball up the pitch. However she is met by a great double team by E. Caldwell and K. Mahoney. Despite great energy and persistence, St Andrews manages to get the pass off and the ball continues to make its way down St Andrews end of the pitch. Defence settles as St Andrews passes the ball round in attack. The ball makes its way behind goal, where the ball carrier attempts a crease roll. However following great communication by defence, she is met by a double team and loses possession to E. Blaszkow. She passes to goalie Abbie Goldstein who midfield clears to K Mahoney.
The ball stays in Glasgows possession until it settles in attack. E. Caldwell sees an opportunity to cut through the fan, receives the pass and scores. The score stands at 9-0 to Glasgow when half time is called.
During half time, Captain Colleen Zulty advises the team to concentrate on running through ground balls and keeping low to stop the ball being flicked into the air and risking a turnover.
In the second half both teams start to tire and play begins to turn more aggressive. The ref deals out multiple yellow cards on both sides for swiping and head checks. However the girls kept their spirits up and continued play. With consecutive goals from E Caldwell, M Raske and Laura Morisette, Glasgow finishes with an impressive 16-0 score.
Everybody played incredibly well and it was a great evening of lacrosse. Special thanks to Anna Weaver and Beth Brophy who umpired the game and to St Andrews 2’s for coming down to play, we wish them all the best for the rest of their season.
