Today the Glasgow Women’s 2nd team travelled up to St Andrews to face the newly formed St Andrew’s 3rd team for their first BUCS match of the new season. This is the 2s team’s 3rd season in BUCS, and with several new players, the girls were all raring to go and excited to get back out on the pitch to bag their first ever BUCS win.
With new player Kenzie Tommins on the draw, Glasgow gained possession quickly, with a quick pass off to fellow teammate Sherry Black and then back to Kenzie who scored the first goal of the match. Followed by several goals from Sherry, Erin Bibb and Juliette Desportes.
St Andrews’ number 24 gained control and ran it halfway up the pitch where she was intercepted by team captain Sarah Elliot subsequently winning the groundball and passing it off to Flora Goodfellow who ran it behind the goal allowing attack to settle. J. Desportes cut to receive and scored a strong low shot into goal.
With Kenzie dominating the draw, Glasgow 2s successfully maintained possession, and after a couple of attempts on goal which were excellently saved by the new St Andrews goalie, top goal scorer Sherry was able to break through with a great goal.
With St Andrews in possession, Glasgow’s defence had to work hard to get the ball back, resulting in a shot on goal, expertly saved by goalie Laura Holloway. She cleared it to Mhairi Cargill who ran it back up the pitch, aided by Lucy Stewart who successfully got it to Maisie Spratt resulting in another goal off a crease roll.
Again St Andrews gained possession but was quickly intercepted by Capucine Poncet, and Glasgow was able to settle again around the goal crease, resulting in another try at goal and another great save by the St Andrews goal keeper. But due to the ball rolling out of the crease, Alexandra Bullard seized the chance to get the groundball and successfully drive to goal.
With contention over a groundball, J. Desportes was up against St Andrews’ number 6 for a throw in, which she won, passing off to 1st year player Erin Bibb who drove to goal, scoring a clean left hand corner goal.
Despite a few further St Andrews attempts on goal after some great transition passes, all saved by L. Holloway, and aided by defenders Lucy Kenwell (vice-captain), Louise McClung and Sarah Elliot, Glasgow successfully scored goals in quick succession by Sherry, Kenzie, Juliette and Maisie.
In the second half, Lucy Stewart winning the draw allowed for M. Cargill to win possession running it behind goal, where she passed off to F. Goodfellow who scored left-handed off a crease roll. And again, after a great take on the draw by L. Stewart, with a clean cut Mhairi received a great pass from Sherry resulting in another goal to Glasgow.
Finally, with a great check from K. Tommins, A. Bullard receives the ball scoring the final goal of the match resulting in a 20-0 win for the 2s.
Overall, it was great first performance from Glasgow Women’s 2s, showcasing a lot of its new talent and setting them up for a great season.
