With the first women’s league of the season, development officer Eve Caldwell arranged a team ranging across the different GULC women’s teams. With Capital bringing their fiercest A game, along with various Scotland lacrosse players, including Women’s Performance Director Ailsa Scott, the Glasgow girls knew this was going to be a tough match, unfortunately losing 13-1 in the end.
Taking the draw against Ailsa was last years president, Eleanor Kerins. Capital managed to take possession of the ball straight off the draw and immediately drove to goal. New member to the club, Sherry Black played some amazing defence and managed to get possession back down Glasgow’s end of the pitch, unfortunately capital managed to get the ball back. Although defence put up an excellent fight including a great double team from Melissa Raske and Georgia Brennan, capital drives and scores.
At the next draw Glasgow’s S Black gains possession, however upon transitioning down to attack, Capital puts up some strong midfield defence and they gain possession. With an interception from Glasgow’s Flora Goodfellow, the ball is back in Glasgow’s possession. S Black takes a shot on goal, but it is declared a no goal by the ref. Capital’s goalie clears to a midfield player. With an interception by Eve Caldwell and a quick pass off to M Raske, the ball is run up Glasgow’s end of the pitch. She loses the ball but is quickly backed up by Molly Burr who, upon facing a double team midfield by Capital, loses possession and Capital drives to goal. A shot is made on goal but is saved by Glasgow’s 2nd team goalie, Laura Holloway. She clears to Khia Beeles, who runs it the whole way down the pitch, despite excellent midfield defending from Capital. She passes off to E Kerins, who quickly passes off to M Raske. Melissa sees an opportunity and scores a goal for Glasgow.
Capital quickly responded by scoring a few more goals, despite great energy in defence from Glasgow, including two interceptions from Devon Troup and Kenzie Tommins. Although Capital had a fair amount of goals over Glasgow, the Glasgow girls kept up great energy and lots of positivity. On the next draw, Glasgow takes possession and drives towards goal. However Capital intercepts and begins running the ball down the pitch. Defence pushes up the pressure and manages to hold off Capital, including great play from F Goodfellow and Laura Morissette. However Capital manage to get past and score. After the next draw, Glasgow begins to see better midfield transitioning and successfully get the ball back into attack. Attack settles, looking for a clear shot on goal, however they are intercepted by Capital. As Capital begin to transition into attack, Glasgow steps up in defence. With a great midfield double team from L Morisette and Juiliette Desportes followed by a good settled defence around the 15 with much better communication, Glasgow manages to hold off Capital. With the ball behind goal in Capitals possession, a cut is made and Capital quickly score.
Despite a fairly significant loss and the rainy weather, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was great to play with our new players for the first time. Massive thankyou to Capital for coming across and to Anna Weaver for refereeing the game.
